As a slight change to previous years, it was decided that the proceeds from the 2016 CAT would be awarded to Aviemore Paralympian Dave Smith, to help with his on-going rehabilitation and ambitious target of cycling in Tokyo in 2020. Watch this space for a report on Dave’s progress.

David Andrew Smith MBE

In 2016 all the money raised went to one incredible local athlete. Not many of us reach personal peak physical fitness, however in 2016 David was in the best shape of his life in preparation for Rio Olympics. However on the 13th Feb 2016 his race on the bike became a race for life.

David walked into hospital on the 29th of February 2016.  He woke up on the 2nd of March 2016 completely paralysed down one side of his body after being diagnosed for the third time with a life threatening spinal cord tumour.

David left Stoke Mandeville Hospital in a wheelchair being told he would have to get used to his situation. He refused to accept this and made sure he walked out the door and continues to set about his rehabilitation. Many of us will remember his facebook video 14.03.2016 where he moved his wrist after 13 days of visualisation.

He has no left arm function and is still learning to walk 4 months on from surgery. David's rehabilitation is a gruelling 4 hours a day at a specialist spinal rehabilitation centre called NeuroKinex that has state of the art equipment and world class therapists.

Since then those of us who follow David have seen him getting back on the bike, back to skiing and growing stronger every day. We wish him a continued return to form.

CAT Committee

“"I would like to say a massive thank you for all the support from CAT. It means a lot to me personally but more importantly it has allowed me continued access to world class rehabilitation. This rehabilitation is important to not only to get me back on a bike but also gain the best quality of life that I can after my last surgery.

The rehabilitation has been extremely taxing and emotionally draining at times as I am away from home, so it is nice to receive support that makes this journey that little bit easier.

Again thank you so much to everyone at CAT who have kindly helped and hopefully I can return with a medal at the end of it all. “

Thank you
David Smith
